The model builders

The stereotypical model builder sits in their workshop, tinkering away. They're a loner, shunning sunlight and only venturing outside to buy new kits or glue! Their social interaction, if it occurs at all, is limited to model-making fairs and exhibitions – and even then, only with like-minded enthusiasts!

It's time to dispel these prejudices!

There are numerous model-building clubs and associations dedicated to the world's most beautiful hobby, sharing their passions with a community.

We are one of them... at PMC Dortmund e.V.

Over 50 years ago, a group of model-making enthusiasts came together and founded the PMC (Model Model Club). From the very beginning, the focus wasn't on formal club politics, but rather on exchanging ideas, tips, and sharing a passion for model building. The choice of subject matter remains irrelevant to this day. Members are represented in all areas. You'll find civilian vehicles, aircraft, trains, figures, ships, military vehicles, and just about anything else there is to build in miniature. Model-making skills are equally unimportant. On the contrary! No beginner is ridiculed or excluded! We offer advice and support, sharing tips to help each other achieve optimal results. Currently, the PMC has around 40 members from a wide variety of professions and all age groups. There are the casual modelers who generally build their favorite models straight from the box, the perfectionists who essentially only use the basic kits and build everything else themselves, and also small-scale manufacturers who have turned their passion into a profession. The range of activities is very diverse. Over the years, and through visits to numerous trade fairs and exhibitions, including international ones, many friendships have developed with other clubs and model builders, making PMC-Dortmund well-known far beyond the regional borders. PMC is a welcome guest at model building events in Germany and the neighboring Benelux countries.

Dortmund Trade Fair - Intermodellbau

A major highlight is the annual INTERMODELLBAU in Dortmund, the largest national model-making trade fair in Germany. Initiated by the PMC's former members, the Westfalenhallen have been hosting this fantastic event for over 40 years, providing a family-friendly forum for the world's most wonderful hobby. Here, the club presents itself in all its facets at a truly large and welcoming stand. We use INTERMODELLBAU to introduce the hobby to a wider audience, answer questions, and recruit new members. An important aspect of this is also our work with children and young people, for which the club receives generous support from industry.

But it's not all about model making. Besides visiting exhibitions together, the social aspect is also very important. Once a month, members meet at the club's regular meeting place, chatting about anything and everything in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Activities like barbecues and craft workshops are regularly on the agenda – and all of this is done on a voluntary basis!

The board

The PMC also collaborates extensively with industry. For example, a 1:24 scale Brian James trailer, which two members helped plan and design, has been released by Aoshima. The magazine ModellFan also frequently draws on the expertise and creativity of its members. Readers will certainly recognize the names Andreas Weber (aircraft), Sascha Müller (1:24 scale civilian vehicles), Joachim Goetz (figures), and Dirk Przyklenk (trade fair coverage). Requests from well-known international model manufacturers for the construction of test models or trade fair samples arrive regularly. Plastic model making is currently undergoing an astonishing technological transformation. Increasingly sophisticated manufacturing processes enable near-perfect and highly detailed reproductions in miniature. Things like 3D reproductions, laser technology, and CNC milling were pure science fiction just a few years ago! Through professional experience in these fields, the club members make it possible to integrate such techniques into their own model making. At every meeting, one or more members showcase their latest achievements. Joint projects are planned and discussed. Contacts range from 3D printing components and decal manufacturers to figure sculptors. This diversity is precisely what makes club life so interesting and exciting. Many PMC members are passionate about model making, and their private collections can fill entire halls. Anyone seeking information about a specific aircraft, ship, or vehicle can be sure to find the answers they need!
